Mental health and behavioral sciences

Mental health and behavioral sciences is a branch of medical science which is an all inclusive medical care system dealing with mental health. It goes into clinical assessment and remedial services covering a gamut of emotional and behavioral disorders for patients irrespective of age and cultural divides.

We have contact with specialized clinics having top notch facilities for diagnosis and treatment of mental diseases. Clinics/hospitals we refer to are ably manned with qualified and experienced medical professionals. Besides they work with state of the art medical facilities. These clinics also work in close tie-up with education and community service providers putting across the idea of preventive mental health procedures too.

We need to give a summary of what actually constitutes mental illness together with treatments. This enables users to get a clear concept of the matter. Types of disorders falling under this category and their general profile are hereunder:

Schizophrenia

It is mental disease where overlap between reality and imaginary world is encountered by the patient. Symptoms can range from inability to focus, strange behavior, social withdrawal, mental unrest, absence of emotion and hallucinations. Causes of this mental disorder can be a mix of genetic and environmental elements.

For treatment, antipsychotic medicines work best by altering chemical balance in the brain and restraining the symptoms. This is a permanent disorder and patients need to be on lifelong medication.

Tourette Syndrome

It is a mental disease associated with the patient making repeated movements and sound in quick bursts. These actions are known as ticks. Typical symptoms include arms throwing, jumping, kicking, blinking of eyes, wiggling the shoulder and repeated throat clearing and sniffing.

The causes can be traced to problems in certain brain areas and it is carried down the families. Treatment can be given by drugs like anti-seizure medications, blood pressure medicines, Botulinum toxin injections and Dopamine blockers.

Depression

It is a feeling of deep misery and it stems from mood fluctuations.  According to WHO, depression is a leading cause of disability in the world. Over 264 million people in the world suffer from depression. Women are more prone to depression than men. Symptoms may range from restlessness, frequent annoyance, hard to focus, an intense feel of pessimisms, sleeplessness and over- sleeping and the behavioral extremes can even border on death and suicidal attempts.

Causes of depression can be from chemical changes in brain stemming from drug and alcohol addiction. It can be caused by strong medicines like steroids like inability to sleep. Certain medical conditions like underactive thyroid, cancer or chronic pain can also trigger depression. Treatment for depression can be achieved by administration of medicines called anti- depressants. Talk therapy known as psychotherapy are also known to work.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

In this case, the patient suffers anxiety where negative thoughts and apprehensions flood the mind. The symptoms can range from excessive counting to rechecking actions. Excessive germ phobia is also a sign of this disorder. Causes are believed to be from head injury and infection.

Treatments are a combination of medication and therapy. A medicine (antidepressant) called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor works well. Psychotherapies are also recommended among which cognitive behavioral therapy is effective. These are aimed towards relieving anxiety, reducing stress and removing inner struggle.
